The pressure to call off the Olympics has increased after a petition signed by 350,000 people was submitted to organisers.

Host city Tokyo is under a state of emergency following a rising number of coronavirus cases across Japan with just 10 weeks to go until the Games are due to begin.

Kenji Utsunomiya, a 74-year-old lawyer, launched the Stop Tokyo Olympics campaign last week and his petition contains signatures from 133 countries.

Utsunomiya said: ‘The Olympics should be cancelled to protect people’s lives. By hosting this pompous event, valuable health care resources will be spent.’

The national union of Japanese doctors also visited Japan’s health ministry to present a letter addressed to prime minister Yoshihide Suga.

Union chief Naoto Ueyama said: ‘It is impossible to hold a safe Olympic Games.’
